Internet Safety For Kids
Are your kids safe online?
Do you know where your kids are right now?
I mean where they are on the internet. Which websites have they visited? What programs or files have
they downloaded? Whom have they chatted with? Are they getting into trouble? Are they safe online?
These are the questions concerned parents should be asking. That catch phrase in the old
public service announcements has a totally new meaning in today's world. Safety for kids are
not limited to the neighborhood streets any more. Your kids could be in harm's way right there in your
living room, in front of the computer screen.
According to recent studies by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
(NCMEC), 1 in 5 children were solicited for sex on the internet, and 1 in 33 children were
aggressively solicited for sex, i.e., they were threatened, asked to meet, called on the phone,
or received mail or gifts. Besides the threats of online predators, your kids could be harassed
by cyber-bullies, or get into drugs or pornography by hanging out with kids that do. News headline
stories
like
these
are simply too scary for any responsible parents.
In this unlimited, border-less world of internet, your kids may already have put themselves
in danger without you knowing it. How do you protect your children from predators, pedophiles, and other
threats on the internet? The answer is: technology and common sense.
Software programs that help to protect your kids
There are two types of software programs that can help your kids stay safe.
One is the internet monitoring software, which lets parents monitor their kid's
online activities. It can record passwords, emails, instant messages, chat
sessions, and website visits. The other is the content filtering software,
which blocks websites you don't want your kids to go to, such pornography, drug,
violence, and so on. The following list of programs are highly recommended.
